Ophthalmic examination

Complete ophthalmological examination

A complete ophthalmological examination is performed exclusively by a specialist ophthalmologist.
It consists of several parts and allows us to accurately determine the diopter, measure the eye pressure, examine the fundus, the macula and the optic nerve.
The review begins with a conversation. The ophthalmologist will first ask you several important questions related to the health of your eyes, the problems you have with your vision, the general health of your body as well as the medications you are taking.

Determination of diopter and visual acuity

Determination of diopters and visual acuity is done on a narrow or wide pupil (objective and subjective determination of visual acuity) depending on the age of the patient using an autokerator refractometer that provides high precision and the possibility of multiple automatic measurements. After that, glasses or contact lenses are prescribed.

Examination of the anterior segment of the eye with a biomicroscope

After determining your diopter and visual acuity, we continue the eye examination on a special type of microscope with a “slit” lamp called a biomicroscope. Under magnification and with the help of a narrow beam of light positioned at a certain angle, we examine the front segment of your eye (eyelids, conjunctiva, cornea, anterior chamber, iris, pupil).

Eye pressure measurement

Eye pressure is the main risk factor for the development of glaucoma, so measuring its values is invaluable and part of every ophthalmological examination.

Eye Clinic Vesta has the most modern apparatus for measuring eye pressure:

  • The applanation tonometer is the gold standard for measuring eye pressure. First, we anesthetize the surface of your eye with drops, apply a small amount of fluorescein dye, and then place the special extension of this device on the eye and read the measurement results. This way of measuring eye pressure is painless.

Dilation of the pupils

The dilation of the pupils allows us to see the deeper structures of the eye. In order to dilate the pupils, we use several types of drops. These drops cause a burning sensation in the eye that goes away in a few minutes. After the drops are instilled, it takes about thirty minutes for the pupils to fully dilate. After the pupils dilate, your vision will be blurry, both near and far. It usually takes four to six hours for the pupils to contract again and visual acuity to return to normal.

Examination of the fundus of the eye

When the pupils are fully dilated, the examination continues with the help of a biomicroscope and an ophthalmic magnifying glass, which we place in front of the eye and thus view its deeper structures. This part of the examination is very important because we get information about the condition of the vitreous body, macula, optic nerve, blood vessels and retina. In this way, it is possible to make an early diagnosis of eye diseases such as glaucoma, senile macular degeneration, assess changes in the macular caused by sugar disease (diabetes), etc. Only a timely diagnosis of many eye diseases enables the application of appropriate therapy, preservation of vision, and prevention of blindness.
